Is it true that the NHL earned $60000000 from the World Cup?
I don't see why the league will ever bother with the Olympics again if the World Cup is going to be such a great cash cow.

That was revenue. Revenue and profit are two entirely different items.
The World Cup did microscopic TV ratings outside of Canada.
Let's compare that to the audience you get at the Olympics...where you're not competing with anything for those 2 weeks.
The larger issue is that the IOC is no longer willing to pay transportation costs to get the NHL players to South Korea (they paid in previous years). While 2018 is really problematic, 2022 is in China (Beijing) and that's really the next big market the league would love to penetrate (2026 could well end up being hosted in North America, which would be a 2-year cycle giving North America the 2024 Summer Olympics (Los Angeles is the overwhelming favourite), the 2026 FIFA World Cup (all but certain), and the 2026 Winter Olympics.
