He kept saying "because I'm a gentleman" and then smile at me playfully after doing these things. Why does he do that?

My best guy friend and I went out to dinner and movie and walked around the mall. We didn't specify if it was a date but those 6 hours we spent together felt like it. He'd share his popcorn with me, let me redo when I messed up while playing pool, pay for the extra tax when we split dinner, etc. He kept saying "because I'm a gentleman" and then smile at me playfully after doing these things. Why does he do that? Is he implying something?

he probably just wants to impress you. But the gentlemanly thing is sexist and stupid. Nowadays, men and women are very equal. Men paid back then in the older days because women didn't tend to work. But now times have changed.
