    D. In the file system on a hard disk

    (or an SSD, if applicable)

    = = = = = = = = = = = =

(or on a CD/DVD if you're running a "live" version of GNU/Linux or some other Unix-like OS from a bootable CD or DVD)

(or on a USB flash drive if you're running an OS from a bootable USB flash drive)

    = = = = = = = = = = = =

This question is based on an old-fashioned computing paradigm.

And, the answer "C. In the cloud" is the new touchy-feely term for "on an HDD or SSD in another computer via a network" ... which is really answer "D.", but from a distance (where the world looks blue and green, and the snow-capped mountains white; where the ocean meets the stream, and the eagle takes to flight).
