Are the states Indiana and Alabama anything alike?

No....the culture is completely different. I've been to both. Alabama is deep southern and Indiana is midwest.

Rural, but otherwise, no.

people live in both. both tend to be more conservative than the liberal left would like.

Not really. I'm sure that there are many similarities but Alabama is more likely to consist of a more conservative population than Indiana.
