Free and Easy Video Editing?

Question

I'm trying to start a video project that includes a playlist of different music along with their subsequent album cover like a radio show or a glorified slideshow. I can't use Windows Movie Maker because I intend on having these videos extend 30 min to an hour long and the program just crashes. I have a windows computer and am kind of technologically impaired. Also, I prefer to keep this project's budget to $0. What's the best editing software that can handle this amount of data, and how do I use it?

Lightworks is a very popular free video editing software product. I've never used it, but it gets great reviews.
