# Help with a physics problem solving question?

A 0.437 kg croquet ball depresses the pan of a spring balance 10.0 mm when resting upon it. If the croquet ball is the dropped from a height of 20.0 cm above the empty pan, how far will the pan be depressed?

k = mg / x = 0.437kg * 9.8m/s² / 0.0100m = 428 N/m

GPE becomes SPE:

mg(h+x)² = ½kx²

0.437kg * 9.8m/s² * (0.200m + x)² = ½ * 428N/m * x²

which has roots at

x = -0.0248 m ← ignore

and x = 0.0330 m = 3.30 cm = 33.0 mm
