Box braids carry strong cultural ties deeply rooted in Africa. The style has been worn by women of Namibia and the Nile Valley as far back as 3500 B.C. The look gained more popularity in the '90s with Janet Jackson's iconic box braids in her 1993 movie, Poetic Justice, and celebs like Beyoncé rock them today.
However, that being said, anyone can get them, if they want. Of course, since we are used to seeing them only on women (and some men) of colour, that is what we think is right. Not so. Others can wear the style, and carry it off very well. There are many other things to consider as well. But it also needs to be adjusted to suit the person wearing them. When you personalize any style -- make it yours -- then it will suit you perfectly! The hard part is knowing how to do that.
Go ahead and do what you want. Make sure you have an operator who knows you well, and who is skilled in the art. They should be able to make some changes to make it YOUR style, and it will look great! If not, then there are other solutions. You really need to find a good stylist, and have your consultation. We can't see you very well from here.
