No. It just costs a lot of money and doesn't give the family of the victim(s) any closure for years, sometimes decades.
Especially since our current death penalty system can't actually carry out any executions right now.
It's true. We used to use lethal injection for executions. The actual injection was actually 3 separate drugs. 1 put you to sleep. 1 made you unconscious. 1 stopped your heart. Unfortunately the manufacturer of the first drug refused to sell it to the state for use in executions. So....at one point California used a horse tranquilizer...but that got shut down because - believe it or not - the attorney argued that using a drug not cleared for human consumption was "Cruel and unusual punishment." Remember, this is for deathrow inmates...
So now, no one can be executed.
California has floated the idea of nitrogen apoxia. Basically, you inhale air with larger and larger amounts of nitrogen - and small amounts of oxygen - until you pass out, and die. It's quick. It's cheap (nitrogen is already 70% of the air we breathe) and it's painless. HOWEVER, an attorney has filed an objection saying that because this system has never been used before, subjecting an inmate to it would be akin to human experimentation.
Yes, remember, these are deathrow inmates.
Even ignoring the fact we can't execute anyone, once you are on deathrow, you can't be executed so long as you keep filing lawsuits or appeals. This is why even when we COULD execute someone, it took DECADES before the appeals ran out. In the meantime, that's DECADES of pointless court cases designed to do only one thing - keep the convict alive. Each day he lives beyond his conviction is a victory for him - and a middle finger to the victims, their families, and us the taxpayers. It costs far more per year to keep someone on deathrow than if he was just part of the general prison population. And meantime you have keep providing him medical care and make sure he doesn't commit suicide. It won't do if your deathrow inmate dies BEFORE you can execute him!
What a f***ed up system!
