The term "soccer" is a slang term. The correct name of the sport is Association Football. FIFA. Federation International Football Association. It's not FISA.

Tradition. Look up the history of the word 'soccer' and you'll see that it started in England as slang for 'Association Football' which distinguishes it from other types of 'football' such as modern day rugby. The term was still used in England up until the 70s by some. The US, having already established NFL as 'football' continued and still continues to use soccer.

The word "soccer" is used in Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United States and many other parts of the English-speaking world. It's a perfectly legitimate term that's been in use for a long, long time. While the English are credited with inventing the game and laying out the modern version of the rules, the English are today known for being continually and persistently terrible and disappointing at it. The greatest footballing nations of the world such as Argentina, Brazil, France and Germany consider England to be a minor factor, as do most fans - both in Britain and around the world. The fact that Brits get their knickers twisted that others refer to football as soccer is only another manifestation of their crippling inferiority complex that they always hide behind a thin veneer of a fake and false air of superiority. This question has a very simple answer, but clearly you're not interested in hearing it. To edit, yes you're most definitely a buffoon of the first order.

Source(s): If you're going to complain about how a fair portion of the English-speaking world uses the word "soccer" instead of "football", you should probably learn to differentiate between the words "word" and "world" first. You make yourself look like a total and complete buffoon. But then again, you most certainly ARE, so that's understandable.

    Here is why.

As you might know , England invented the game of football (knows as soccer in USA), they also invented the game of rugby.

Originally Rugby was Called Rugby Football and Football (soccer) was called Association Football.

As you can foresee most people din't fancy saying rugby football and association football (such long phrases) when referring to the respective sports.

So they started calling rugby football just Rugby and Association Football, soccer (the word comes from the word "association")

BUT! No one liked that term soccer, so they said fek it, Rugby football is Rugby, and Association Football will just be Football, and no one ever used the term Soccer until damn Americans started using it, probably just to spite the British.

and that the story of the Word "Soccer", thanks for tuning in, Stop by Next week as we will answer the following question- "How to Spam someone to death?"
