Is it normal for a washing machine to spin so strongly it's loud and vibrates the washing machine stuff on top falls off?

I have a new GE top load washing machine.

It scares me because it vibrates so much and spins loudly.

It doesn't make a noise like it's grinding or anything is loose, it just is loud because it's spinning so fast and hard.

Is it normal?

It should not vibrate if it is properly balanced. It should have been balanced when it was installed. Perhaps, the installer was lazy and a lousy installer. Try and fix it yourself. Noise levels vary per machine. Some of the newer ones are virtually noise-free. Even if yours is old, it shouldn't be too noisy. If you have access to the manual or the model number, check the noise level. That will give you an idea how noisy is normal for that machine.

Yes. Stuff placed on top of a washer may very well get shaken off. That said, maybe it does need to be balanced better.

It is probably not balanced properly on the floor. At the front there are two little feet that you can turn to adjust them up or down. See if you can wobble the machine at all If it moves, tighten up the foot that is not down to the ground, so they are both level. That should stop the vibration.

Try spinning without a load. If it is still loud and vibrating, call the manufacturer or the store and get it looked at. If it is quiet, you had an out of balance load. Stop the washer and rearrange the load.
