People are inherently selfish because they suffer from an inherent sense of insecurity which is unavoidable in the circumstances where we are so minuscule compared to the vast universe which throws at us an ever-present element of uncertainty that we can not surmount or counter completely.

There is a balance in is world between selfishness and unselfishness. A pessimist might see mostly selfishness while and optimist might see mostly generosity.
