    the fluid is (relatively) incompressible, so putting pressure on one part forces the fluid to move and apply pressure elsewhere. I push here, it moves over there. It is the use of a fluid rather than a solid to transfer the pressure. Whatever volume change you have at the master cylinder must be accommodated at the other end through a motion. This is why air in the lines is bad, though, because air bubbles will compress and interfere with the transfer of volume.
