It gives pitchers a better grip on the ball, and that allows them to have better control over the balls movement.

It’s cheating. They should not do it. I don’t believe that many pitchers throw a spit ball.

To gain an edge over the hitters.

In the old days, when it was much more common to throw it and before it was outlawed, pitchers threw it to physically make the ball do unpredictable behavior.

Since it's been outlawed, the extreme few who use it will obviously use it for the above reason, but now it's more used to mess with a hitter's mind. Even if the pitch *isn't* always thrown by a suspected spitballer, the hitter is leery that it could be coming in at any given time.

That's a psychological edge the pitcher gets. Gaylord Perry was the master of that.

    It's against the rules.

Most use to put vaseline under the bill of their cap, adjust It and put It in a seam.

It makes the ball do unexpected movements therefore harder to hit.
