The bible talks about how the righteous suffer no harm while the wicked have problems galore?

Does this mean you can have a comfortable life if you are righteous?

What constitutes harm?

Does failing an exam fall into the harm category?

Does getting embarrassed in public fall into the harm category?

It may be speaking about suffering no harm from God . in this world which we know God doesn't harm His people and when He punishes them for disobedience it's not seen are harm but as chastisement. But if someone sets their heart to do evil all their life you better bet that God is going to harm that person, and maybe even kill them as He did to all the unrepentant people in the past. Gods people will suffer persecutions though, but that's not from God. That's from Satan and the fallen spirits.

Hebrews 12:6 6For whom the LORD loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.

2 Timothy 3:12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.

Where did this idea come from that the righteous (christians) never suffer harm in this world but only the wicked/unsaved do ?

We read in the bible that Christ's apostles all suffered persecution and many of them died gruesome deaths at the hands of wicked and unbelieving people.

e.g The apostle Stephen was stoned to death by a mob of unbelieving Jews (Acts 7:52-59)

The apostle Paul suffered terrible persecution during his preaching e.g beatings and imprisonment and told Timothy that all (christians) shall suffer persecution who live godly in Christ Jesus (2Tim 3:12)

Church history is proof that christians down through the ages have suffered terrible harm for their faith in Jesus Christ e.g dark ages.

Some may say christians living in western countries don't suffer wicked things like others before them --- which is probably true and we should thank God that he can influence the minds of the leaders of those nations not to do absolute evil on his people.

But what about our christian brothers and sisters living in non-western countries suffering wicked harm at the hands of authorities and its citizens?

Christians should be praying for our fellow christians suffering with the hope God will open the eyes of the people persecuting them (1Tim 2:1-2)

Of course christians can suffer anywhere in this world at the hands of evil minded people through crime and immoral actions --- and sadly some christians end up doing that as well --- but its untrue the righteous never suffer harm.

To the title question: No, scripture says something very different than that.

"...your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous."

*Both* the righteous and the unrighteous can prosper and both can have troubles and suffering...

    But...then something profoundly different happens....

When sudden disaster comes unexpected upon the unrighteous, for them there is no ultimate salvation from it!

That's not like for the righteous -- those made righteous through faith in Christ Jesus -- our mortal bodies will die also...but we have salvation from death!

Suffering can happen to anybody, regardless of religion.

  • Bible lies. I've known people who did nothing to anybody, and suffered terribly.
