Humans support one another through serious and joyful, substantial changes in each others' lives.
No one really *wants* to go to funerals, either. Don't kid yourself, it isn't about showing respect for the dead person. You had your chance to do that when he or she was alive. You go to funerals to comfort the bereaved, and demonstrate you share their grief.
You don't need to go to concerts for your favorite band, you could listen to a cd in your bedroom. You don't need to go on dates with a romantic interest. I supposed each of you could sit at home, eat a dinner you heated up in a microwave, and watch each other eat it on Skype. You don't need to go to school when you could just sit in front of a computer reading. All these things are more fun, meaningful, and memorable when you share the experience with people who you care about, and who care for you.
