Why is there so much blood involved in giving birth?

What's bleeding?

    A lot comes from the uterus where the placenta was attached some of the veins can be large.

    Well, I imagine some of it comes from if and when a woman rips/tears in her downstairs area. But uh, other than that honestly, I have no clue.
