Satchmo was born in 1901 in New Orleans, often claimed as the birthplace of jazz. While the initial style is sometimes named "Dixieland", there is a bleak historical hangover with the term "Dixie" (to say the least), hence we can also call the style "traditional" or "trad jazz" (1900s onward). And that means . . . it's where it all started! Armstrong also can be included in the genres of "swing" (1930,40s) as well as pop ( 1960s, see: Hello Dolly).

He started in the 1920s, playing in a style loosely defined as Dixieland, and basically repeated that for the rest of his life though adding a few new songs.
