    £4 (100 pence/1£) = 400 pence

    old value (prior to 1971), 12 pence = 1 shilling, 20 shilling = 1 pound

    so 4 pounds = 4 x 240 = 960 pence

    current value, 100 pence = 1 pound

    so 4 pounds = 400 pence

    Multiply it by 100 and so 4*100 = 400 pence
