Why is it useful to understand population distribution and density patterns ?

    Businesses need to know that stuff to know where to advertise and sell their products. Governments need to know so they can plan for when and where they'll need to provide police and fire protection, water and sewer service, public transit, schools and libraries, etc. And drivers need to know so they don't plan a route that goes through downtown Los Angeles at rush hour :)

    why would you think it's useful? I certainly don't find them useful, and I don't understand them at all.
