Are my nervous habits a sign of mental illness?

I have a lot of repetitive habits that sometimes hurt me, but no matter what I do I can’t control the urge to do them. Like for example: picking at or cutting my cuticles with sharp objects until they bleed, punching or hitting my head against hard surfaces, chewing my lip, pinching myself, obsessively scratching my skin until it bruises, etc. I even used to eat my own hair as a kid, until I cut my hair too short to reach my mouth. I do these things every day and once I get started I can’t stop. They calm me down and I feel crazy if I don’t do them. Are these common behaviors, or are they a sign of something more serious?

It could be a sign of something serious. Get checked out by a mental health professional.

Yes. Please find a good psychiatrist and stick with him/her.

Unfortunately, you are severely mentally ill.  I'm so sorry.
