What's the best way to prevent infection: keeping a wound covered or letting the air get to it?

Use common sense. If you move about in a relatively clean place and you can keep your wound out the of the way of other people and objects, you can leave it open. If people seem to be horrified about it, cover it up. Whatever you do, keep the would clean and apply a topical antibiotic. If the wound is large or deep, you will need to see a doctor. Stitches and more medicine may be required.

For years, people have believed that keeping wounds uncovered to let them air out helps them heal faster, however extensive research has proven this treatment to be untrue. Keeping a wound protected after applying a First Aid Antibiotic Ointment like neosporin is extremely important for proper wound healing

In the first couple days, you need to wash would with warm water and soap, then use antibiotic cream, then seal with gauze/bandage to prevent ‘germs’. Then you can air it out. Skin has a protective layer naturally, where skin is torn and underside exposed that must be protected from germs or yes, will take longer to heal and may get infected.

Cover it with a bandage that keeps dirt out and lets air in.

Neither. Keeping the wound clean and a new breathable dressing every 24 hours is the most effective.
