Why should the fine adjustment knob be used in a microscope?

This is a "how optics function" question.  In a microscope the "depth of field" is a very small number.  The microscope has a focal plane which is very thin.  Using the fine knob allows moving that plane very slowly so object can be observed very clearly show features at different levels in the object.  The point be a fast focus may provide an image but, there are more images to resolve at different Z axis levels and the fine knob is good for this action.
