WiFi stands for Wireless Fidelity. It describes a technology for radio wireless local area networking of devices based on the IEEE 802.11 standards, which are maintained by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) LAN/MAN Standards Committee (IEEE 802).

It doesn't stand for anything. This is a common misconception. People remember HiFi which stood for high fidelity, but WiFi is just what it is, a name.

well, it doesn't stand for 'wireless fidelity'..... except, it sorta does.

Back in the day, when stereo music became the norm, it was called 'High Fidelity' - because it gave a 'faithful' (latin: fidelis) reproduction of the sound. This got shortened to Hi-Fi

when they were looking for a trademark for the Wireless data transfer standard, they hit on 'WiFi' because it refers back to the Musical 'Hi-Fi' standard

so, it doesnt mean Wireless Fidelity, but it references High Fidelity/Hi-Fi'
