If Kings are picked by God, why were so many of them killed over the years by their own people?

Because they were the ones God picked to get killed by their own people.
Others, he picked to get killed by other people.
A few, he picked to get killed by old age or disease.
But all were picked to be killed by something.
Nice, huh?.

There are hundreds of gods and being picked by one will not outweigh being unpicked by ten others

Yes,and Presidents get picked by some of the people and they have only killed a few of them.
And in some countries leaders get pick by some of the people they have already killed. I think Chicago was that way once.

Precisely because they claimed to be chosen by God.
Most kings are killed by or under the authority of close relatives (brother, son cousin...) for succession issues.
Religious observance has often be used as an excuse.
When people kill a king, it's usually for religious reasons: either the king faith doesn't fit everyone beliefs in the country (how could it when there is more than one religion in the country) or because the king personifies the religious oppression the people want to get rid of.
Kings suck!😐
Carol; Thanks for the BA.
