do office managers track worker "performance"?

Im starting my first office job so wondering, usually im told by office workers they do all the work they need to do within 4 hrs and spend the other 4 hrs chatting with coworkers or surfing the net. and how can u track talking to clients on the phone, answering client emails, so im thinking its hard to track all this, they make a big fuss about performance in min wage warehouse jobs behind the office despite the fact theyll fire u immediately once the "busy season" is over regardless of performance, so i was wondering how it is in the other end?

Do not expect to do nothing 4 hours a day everyday.  Many jobs have performance measurements and bonuses related to performance.

Yeah, spend 4 hours a day chatting or surfing the net and see how long you're employed.

Usually less.  Waste half the day and most places will first warn you and then fire you.

What you describe is a badly managed office. Don't take it as typical. Management can track telephone usage, clients handled, and customer feedback, as well as direct observance.
