Is it true that small private aircraft get shot down by the government regularly in South America? ?

A pilot from Peru told me this

If true, it's probably, it's planes suspected of carrying drugs that are told to land for inspection, and they DON'T, so they're shot down.

    • I doubt a Peruvian pilot would make up something awful like this. He has to fly thru various countries'   airspaces for a Living.

Depends on who is piloting, what they are doing, where and when it occurs, and any rights of some government in South America to regulate its airspace.  It might be true.
