Why did America focus on ship building at the beginning of WWI?

    Because the airplane was not yet in common usage, so most shipping and war materials had to go by boat.  If you want to defeat a country you usually had to control the shipping of materials and supplies getting to that country.  That mean controlling the sea with your own ships.

    Maybe to increase the ability to get the troops and supplies.

    German  submarines were sinking lots of ships in the Atlantic Ocean, and the more ships the more supplies could be sent to Europe.

    Transportation of supplies and troops. Also to make money via the Lend-Lease program.
