What are the basics in copyrighting game programming code? For example, what’s black & white and what is grey area?

    What's black and white is that if you wrote it then it's copyrighted as long as you have it in "tangible form".

    Everything else is grey.

    In the US, before you can take a copyright issue to court, you have to register the program with the US copyright office.  So, you have to fill out an application and pay a fee.  But you still have a copyright even if it hasn't been registered.
