The Greeks were never strong, ''great civilization'' is subjective.
Study ancient history, and I mean via text book, not via Hollywood movies. The Greeks were always meek polis with a lot of infighting, never strong. The Greeks never created an empire, Alexander the Great was Macedonian, and his father had defeated the Greeks prior.
The only reason we glorify the Greeks is because the mighty Roman Empire adopted Greek culture as their own [even their renamed gods] back when they themselves conquered the Greeks. Countless empires, including the Persians [300 fans] conquered the Greeks.
Americans are barbaric and poorly educated full of propaganda just like you

They were still a great civilisation as monotheists. As the Byzantines (or Eastern Empire if you prefer) they remained the last light of high civilisation long after most of the rest of Europe had gone dark. They were finally supplanted by even more powerful monotheists in the shape of the Ottomans.
It was not the Greek religion that made their culture so vital to the development of the modern world. It was their philosophy and reasoning. The great classical thinkers far transcended any capricious mountain gods they thought might exist.

Shifting economic and political landscapes seem a bit more powerful than any deities in the rise and fall of empires.
