Why should it take significantly more energy to move a beam of alpha particles than a beam of beta minus (β– ) particles?

    depends on the density of the beams, but if both have the same number of particles, then the answer is that the alpha particles are much heavier per unit charge than the beta particles. 

    alpha particle has 4 nucleons and a charge of 2

    beta particle has 1 electron, which weighs about 1/1800 of a nucleon and a charge of 1.
