    They use sun power, heat to activate the solar panels to produce a current flow of electric, in stead of steam or water or atomic power. One side effect is in the areas were the panel are the ground area gets hotter from the dark panels drawing the intens sun light and heat there.  Also if they are on your house roof and it starts on firer they can not use water to put it out, they can not shut that power off. They store any exsest power in batteries to use over night when there is no sun.

    I don't know who thought of it. Its in early mythological translations centering around promytheus.
