In general it is 2 people per bedroom + 1.  Some big cities have local laws regulating how many non related people can live in one rental so check that if this is not a family.

The rule of thumb is no more than 2 people per bedroom, so the answer is six.

It depends on the complex but most times it is ‘suggested’ that it is a max of 7. While yes people can sleep in the living room many apartment complexes will not allow it for safety reasons. It also can depend on the square footage of the apartment.

    without looking up local law..

most areas it is NOT 2 per bedroom as ignorant people spew.

most areas go by over all size of sleeping areas which can include living room/dining room.  in those areas it is not uncommon for 6 or more to fit into a 1 bedroom and 8 or more into a 2 bedroom and 10 or more in a 3 bedroom....

in 1 area that does go by number of bedrooms, it was 3 per bedroom.

also, some areas have stricter limits for non related roommates...10 may be allowed if its 1 family unit, but if the residents are not related, max would be 6.

also, if there is only 1 bathroom, it may be a lower limit.

the 2 per bedroom is a HUD guideline to determine housing discrimination and/or eligibility for a larger rabbit hutch for a human who is procreating like a rabbit.

a landlord may disallow an actual bed in the living room, but shouldn't be poking around at night...you can use couches/air mattress.  I knew a family that would daily pick up a mattress and put in the bedroom and return it to the living room floor at night.

and you can get away with putting 3-4 in a bedroom.

Depends what the lease says, but six is probably the max.
