There are many solutions but minus the political will to act and the generally rebellious nature of Americans it's not a problem easily solved.

The problem is more complex that it seems on its face. We didn't get fat for any one reason but for dozens, and many can not be reversed.

A hundred years ago, people didn't do more physical activity because they wanted to be at a healthy weight. It was the only way to do a great many things, and when labor-saving ways were invented, we seized upon them, to our detriment. Would you rather walk four miles or drive? Sow, raise, and harvest most of what you eat, or go to the grocery store? Roll up the rug, carry it outside, hang it over a clothesline, and beat it, then lug it back, or vacuum? Scrub dirty clothes in a barrel or tub, wring out each item, carry them wet to an outdoor clothesline, hang them to dry, bring them inside, and iron them, or use a washer and hang them promptly when they come out of the dryer?

The demands on our time from school and work, especially for women, has led many a person and entire household away from home-cooked meals into fast food, which has a deserved reputation for unhealthy levels of fat and salt, oversized portions, and high calorie counts. Not that all home-cooked meals are or were healthy, but overall the typical diet included more fruits and vegetables, more dairy products, and less fat when we ate what Mom cooked.

Appetite can be created via image, including moving images, smell, and of course sight. We are surrounded with media all day every day, and food advertisers get their products in our face frequently, making us think "I want that!" when we aren't even hungry.

Probably in school kids should be encouraged more to eat healthy and learn about the benefits. Also they should look at banning fast food advertising in certain places.
