Pretty much everything is possible. The thing is though, is it probable? If there is a vulnerability in the telegram app or desktop software, it's possible a message could trigger it. Has there ever been such a vulnerability found? I'm not sure but you could do some research on it. It's also possible that a person could message a link to a malicious app or program that when ran, would infect the device but this would require you, the user, opening the file. I would say the probability of getting "hacked" through telegram is pretty low. Just be careful who you communicate with and don't run suspicious files.
