is there any shame in looking away rather than holding another man's gaze?

i'm a male in my early forties with quite a nervous disposition, i have an anxiety disorder and when i'm walking the street at times, there have been times ive glanced at another man walking in the opposite direction in the street and the guy gazed at me and i immediately looked away because of fear and my nerves....but in those times when i did look away, i've felt angry and frustrated because i think i should hold another mans gaze until he looks away first?.....so in a sense , when i looked away i felt i lost some battle and my self esteem plummeted.

any tips or advice on how to deal with this situations?

You never should be holding someone's gaze out on the street, unless you are saying hello. Beyond that, if he's a stranger, you shouldn't be thinking of anything else. Just go about your business.

Only if you don't mind being asked if you want to go for a drink.
