Is it safe to send rovers on the surface of dwarf

Planet Pluto, so that we can discover and study the environment of its surface?

    Well... it's *possible*.  And, we send rovers normally because we don't have the means of sending people - so, it may not be safe for the rover, but it would be safe for the rest of us.

    Safe is a relative term. It's nowhere safe outside the Earth. Even on Earth it can be unsafe, depending where you are. So, a rover can be put on any planet as long it has a solid surface and a solid power supply. But even the solid planets do differ a lot that makes it in some cases very hard to do so. Mars obviously is the easiest planet. It's close by, it's surface conditions are relative mild and it does not take huge amounts of time to get there. Mercury and Venus are bloody hot. Mercury would be doable if you land exactly on the terminator. Venus is very difficult, because temperatures are there over 450C and the atmospheric pressure is over 90 bars. (imagine your car tire usually gets like 2.5 bars) and we live in a standard 1 bar environment. You need to make a rover like a deep sea submarine to go there. So, Pluto, first of all it's officially not a planet anymore, but a dwarfplanet, but still it's possible to go there but it takes a lot of planning and calculations and you definitely need an RTG, because solar light is very dim out there. If you are interested in a similar mission, search on Wikipedia for "Dragonfly", this mission is approved and will deploy a drone, or a double quad copter to the Saturn moon of Titan, which is nearly as freezing as Pluto. The interesting aspect of this mission is, it will be a vehicle that lands, does research, takes off, lands again, does more research etc. It's very fascinating. And, on a moon that has liquids on it's surface. Liquid methane to be exact.

    Yes, it is safe. But it is hard to get there. And it's so far from the sun that it couldn't use solar panels for power.

    Its just as safe as sending rovers to Mars, but the time lag for communication with the rovers would make it impractical to control it from Earth.

    What do you mean by "safe"?

    We would not be harmed by anything that happens on Pluto.

    The rovers might be destroyed on landing or by some accident during their travels. That would be unsafe for them, but would not affect us in any way at all - except for the enormous waste of money on a failed mission.

    It would be hard to do that mission because of the time lag for commands to go from earth to the rover, and for information to get from the rover back to earth.

    It could surely be done but given that only Cynthia (our moon) and Mars have so far had rovers landed on them, I wouldn't hold your breath for it happening.

    Safe, yes.

    Worth the $2 billion and15 years to get there for what you learn?  Not sure.

    Source(s): Doubt one can do the same planets' speed boosts that was done decades ago to get there in future. Might take longer. The rocket will have to be much more massive for larger payload. We don't have one that size yet. And landing a rover is much more difficult than doing a flyby at about 31,000 mph.
