Is Hawaii on a plate boundary? Why are there volcanoes there?

Hawaii is right in the middle of the Pacific plate. But it's over what's called a 'hot spot', a place where magma comes up out of the ocean floor. Kind of like a subterranean volcano. If you look at the Hawaiian Islands you can see they're a chain. As the plate moved over the hot spot in the last several million years, it burned several holes through the plate and formed several volcanic islands.

no, Hawaii is not. There is a plume in the mantle and through the Earth's crust that created the entire chain of islands from Midway to Hawaii
