    Some of the answers here are evidently based on the film rather than on the book.

    Giving a sense of setting, introducing the characters, setting the stage for what is to come.  A warm, homey scene with all of them sitting together and having breakfast but with a sense of foreboding due to serious problems happening in their home land that they are now being forced to face.

    They all sit down to a nice breakfast because they think they may have a long walk ahead of them.

    Try reading it.

    It's not very long and then you'll be able to do your own homework.

    Hobbits are described;

    Bilbo the hobbit meets Gandalf the wizard.

    The mission is set forth: Bilbo and the dwarf tribe are to go fight the dragon who is not allowing the dwarfs to reclaim their wealth.

    You'd do better by reading it.

    Read it and find out for yourself. For the love of God, you were asked to read a single chapter. If that's too much for you, drop out and go scrub toilets.
