make underground housing for yourself

I'm guessing you haven't thought this through much. Wouldn't it be good to at least know who is nuking whom first.

A tiny one room apartment about six foot down in your local cemetery.
No where on this planet will be a safe haven.
Even nuclear fall out shelters are a waste of time in an all out nuclear war as the whole planet will be uninhabitable for a few thousand years or so.

Lets assume you are not killed in the blast. Lets assume you did not get a full load of radiation and die from that. Lets assume you can avoid fallout and do not die from that. Now, you need to go to a place where you can grow food. Not raid grocery stores, not find a bunker full of food, you need to go to a place where you can grow food. Some pacific island might work as you can get food out of the ocean, it grows on trees and you can plant stuff. Of course you may find you end up on an island that can support 1000 people and there are 10,000 people there. Face it, unless you have laid away 2-3 years of food AND already live in a place where you can grow food and are ready to do it, you most likely will not survive.
