What is the difference between a tomato and a potato?

They both have very similar names and I usually confuse one with the other.

    Potato..... pronounced pot-ay -to.

    Tomato...pronounced tom-ah- to.

    Potato is a root vegetable, tomato is a fruit.

    Tomato is a fruit and grows above ground on a vine. A potato is a tuber and grows underground on a vine.
