Two objects of same material are traveling

near you. Object A is a 1.7 kg mass traveling

14 m/s; object B is a 2 kg mass traveling 5 m/s.

Which object would make you feel worse if

you are hit by it?

Mass (m) = 1.7 kg

Speed (v) = 14 m/sec

Momentum (p) = Mass (m) x speed (v) = 1.7 kg x 14 m/sec = 23.8 kg.m/sec

Kinetic Energy (K.E)A = ½mv² = ½ x 1.7 kg x (14 m/sec)²

= 166.6 J.

Object B:-

Mass (m) = 2 kg

Speed (v) = 5 m/sec

Momentum (p) = Mass (m) x speed (v) = 2 x 5 = 10 kg.m/sec

Kinetic Energy (K.E)B = ½ mv² = ½ x 2 x (5)² = 25 J

∴ (K.E)A > (K.E)B.

• Momentum = mv, KE = ½mv²

Object 1: momentum = 23.8 kgm/s; kinetic energy = 166.6 J

Object 2: momentum = 10.2 kgm/s; kinetic energy = 25.0 J A

Ans: Object 2 (both momentum and kinetic energy are more than those of Object 2)

• ma = mass of Object A = 1.7 kg

va = velocity of Object A = 14 m/s

mb = mass of Object B = 2 kg

vb = velocity of Object B = 5 m/s

KEa = kinetic energy of Object A = to be determined

KEb = kinetic energy of Object B = to be determined

KINETIC ENERGY

KE = 0.5mv²

KEa = 0.5·ma·va²

KEa = (0.5)·(1.7 kg)·(14 m/s)²

KEa = 166.6 J

KEb = 0.5·mb·vb²

KEb = (0.5)·(2 kg)·(5 m/s)²

KEb = 25 J

Therefore, KEa > KEb.
