How do corn farmers survive in the winter?

Don't Midwest states get cold in the winter too cold to grow corn?

    Yep.

That is why they don't plant until spring.

They have to make enough money and supplies to last the rest of the year, as there's no winter growing season for corn in the USA.

From application of the wisdom found in Ecclesiastes 3:1-8. "To every thing there is a season." Farmers attempt to save the immediate wealth for the times of scarcity, rather than spending it all too soon.

Some have other jobs to sustain their income, until plowing/planting begins again.

In the autumn, and into winter, their income starts rolling in from the grain elevators who are selling the grain to various users. Soy beans for plastic and diesel fuel, corn for animal food so you can get a hamburger from McDonalds, etc. Yes, it gets cold during winter in most of the U.S. and Canada. This is a period of time for the microbes in the soil to rest and rebuild.

Um, crop farmers have pretty much ALWAYS left their fields empty in the winter.  They upkeep their equipment in the winter.

They cash their government subsidy check and head for Florida for the winter.

They light the fields on fire and harvest popcorn.
