x² - 4x + 9 = x² + 2a x + (a² + b)

2a = - 4

a = - 2

b + 4 = 9

b = 5

=(x^2 - 4x) + 9

=( x^2 - 4x+4) + 9 - 4

=(x - 2)^2 + 5
