    If a = -2 and b = 5,

    x^2 - 4x  + 9 is a perfect square.

    x²  - 4x  + 9   = x²  + 2a x + (a²  + b)

    2a   = - 4

    a   = - 2

    b  + 4   = 9

    b   = 5

    x^2-4x+9

    =(x^2 - 4x) + 9

    =( x^2 - 4x+4) + 9 - 4

    =(x - 2)^2 + 5

    a = - 2 and b = 5 .. answer//

    The values of a and b such that

    x^2 - 4x + 9 = (x + a)^2 + bx^2 - 4x + 4 + 5 = (x - 2)^2 + 5

    a = -2 and b = 5

    Expanding (x+a)^2+b gives you ?

    In there, whats the coefficient of x?

    Answer these & we will proceed.

    Hopefully no one will spoil you the answer thereby depriving you from your personal enhancement; that would be very inconsiderate of them.   Too late  :(
