Rock and roll typically uses the guitar or piano (or sometimes the harmonica) as the lead instrument, and includes the electric bass (or acoustic equivalent) and a drum set to provide a back beat or rhythm. Dance music usually does not include a lead instrument, and is mostly rhythmic. Pop music often uses an acoustic guitar or piano only and may not include electric guitar, bass guitars or drums and usually does not have a dance rhythm. Early Bob Dylan (acoustic guitar only) is not rock music, but folk, and he later added electric guitar, bass and drums and that turned his music into rock and roll.

One of the things you'll quickly notice is that a lot of rock music (and its sub genres) tends to be overall louder compared to pop music. There's the loudness and overall more 'aggressive' beat, music, vocals, etc.

There is a heavier emphasis in the instruments, particularly the guitar(s). Songs usually have a main solo and maybe some smaller solos.

Pop music seeks to reach out to a large audience, rock music is considered as a sub-culture or an ideology. Rock music focuses on live performances whereas pop music focuses on recording, production and technology. Pop music has no artistic depth. Rock music concentrates upon artistry and technique. Pop music aims to please.
