Are multi level network marketing companies like Amway and Herbalife actually de facto pyramid schemes in denial?

No, they are not. Pyramid schemes are illegal and have no product to sell, no inventory, no means of production. Those companies have all of that.

Amway actually sells products some people buy.

Many 'members' operate more as a pyramid scheme than as salesmen, but the company as a whole is legitimate.

Yes they are. Any company that pays you more for recruiting new people than it does for commissions on your sales, is really a pyramid.

Amway Herbalife, etc. are 100% legal ... and scams.  They make most of their revenue from people that start up but do not follow up.  An even better legal scam in the marketplace is stamps.com.  A huge percentage of their customer base is inactive but still paying the monthly fee.  Beware the legal scam.
