Math Problem?

Lazlo and Rupa ride their bicycles from Winnipeg to St. Pierre-Jolys, a distance of 54 km, and back. They are somewhat tired o the return trip, and ride 4km/hr slower than they did for the first part of their ride. Their trip takes 5hrs, counting a 3 min stop for a drink. How fast did they travel on the outbound trip?

    Lazlo and Rupa ride their bicycles

    from Winnipeg to St. Pierre-Jolys, a distance of 54 km, and back.

    They are somewhat tired of the return trip,

    and ride 4 km/hr slower than they did for the first part of their ride.

    Total distance is 108 km.

    Their trip takes 5 hrs, counting a 3 min stop for a drink.

    Their trip takes 4 hours 57 minutes.

    54/x + 54/(x - 4) = 4.95

    54(x - 4) + 54x = 4.95x(x - 4)

    4.95x^2

    How fast did they travel on the outbound trip?

     5hrs - 3 min = 4h57min = 99/20 hours

    the outbound speed = x km/h

    ---> the return speed = (x-4) km/h

    Time = distance / speed

    54/x + 54/(x-4) = 99/20

    solve for x
