product key?

I have a Presario Compaq cq57 it originally had ubuntu booted onto it but I wanted windows 10. I got a downloaded installer  an (ISO) file from yore site to put it on a boot drive and I set it up and chose windows 10 home,64-bit. I got it set up but it says I need a product key to activate but I don't have one, their is a tag on the bottom with a product key for windows 7 it did not work.

Update:

the windows 7 version is home perm QA than it was booted to ubuntu 14.04 than I booted it to windows 10 home using a (ISO) file from Microsoft

    The Windows 7 key should work under Windows 10. Just make sure you have installed the correct version of W10 that the key corresponds to. In other words, if your key is from a Home version, install the Windows 10 Home, don't install Pro or other versions.

    Did you get an error message with the key that you tried?

    Of course it doesn't work. It's for Windows 7.

    Solution: Install Windows 7. There is now a free upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10.

    • Windows 7 and 8 keys can activate the corresponding Windows 10 version.

    You might have to purchase one from Microsoft, or use the product key to install Windows 7 and then upgrade it to Windows 10.
