Why do people make dishes out of fragile materials like glass and porcelain?

Like, why don’t people use wood or stone?

    It's cheap and easy to make dishes out of clay or sand (pottery and glass) and they are lightweight, easy to clean and sterilize, compact to store, and can be made very beautiful so they enhance the enjoyment of the food and drink they carry. If they break they are easily replaced. What's not to like about that?

    Wood is porous and so is some stone. Glass is not porous and properly-fired porcelain is not porous. You do not want to use dishes that will absorb foods.

    Wood absorbs oils & food. Stone is heavy but easy to clean if just set in the river. So you need live next to a river for it. China glass porcelain, does break & dulls knives cutting, So that leaves your good plastic wear as best. & it can use recycled plastic to make.

    Firstly because they're traditional, secondly because they will stand up to the heat of an oven, and thirdly because they aren't porous so they are easy to clean and won't hide bacteria.

    That last one is the most important.  Unglazed pottery has the same problems as wood and stone, it's porous and it will stain from whatever you put in it.  But apply a glaze before putting it in the kiln and you get a smooth non-porous surface that doesn't stain.

    Of course there are modern alternatives.  All my casserole dishes are Pyrex, a form of glass that is less fragile and won't so easily crack in a hot oven.

    But that's it - the best materials are hard and smooth for easy cleaning, and it is unfortunate these are usually the most fragile.

    Glass can go in the oven and wood can't. Ceramic is less fragile though.

    Because it is easier to keep glass and porcelain clean and also germ-free.

    just cuz it looks good.

    and wood is great for utensials, not for cooking. would stain fast too after a while of pasta sauce cooking

    and stone no way.

    They did to a small extent, but stone was too heavy and difficult to work and wood too absorbant.

    They do make dishes out of stoneware, but they’re glazed. Wood and stone harbor bacteria unless sealed with something. Even then, wood wouldn’t hold up to repetitive washings.
