What’s the best way to pick high return stocks for an IRA?

    Buy index funds. You cannot beat the market over time it is an impossibility. Experts cannot do it without committing fraud.

    look at the performance of stock in the library at books publicly available like Standard and Poor's. you can also google.com online a stock name and read up on individual stocks.

    IMHO, individual stocks are too risky for retirement accounts.  

    I have hundreds of thousands of dollars in my IRA and 401k and not one individual stock.

    Stick to low cost mutual funds.
