Most people define "American" as someone from the United States of America, but since Canadians live in North America it is possible to consider them Americans under the expanded definition.

Words are used to convey a message. If the message would be confused because the people communicating are using different definitions it is helpful to make sure everyone is on the same page of the dictionary.

Canada is in North America, so technically they are "Americans".  People usually associate that with U.S. citizens only, but it's really not the case.

Technically speaking, any native of the Americas is an American.

However, around the world, the term "Americans" is recognized as referring to citizens of the United States. Canadians do not call themselves Americans.

NO, they are not Americans anymore than people from South America are Americans. They are a totally other country ruled by England as a vassal of the UK. The USA fought a civil war to get rid of the royalty and sending them money most Americans are insulted when you ask that.

No. Despite on the surface being similar Canadians and Americans are quite different. Different slang, word use eh? Canadians have an overall sense of humor that Americans lack. Canadians are less Puritan in nature. They are a hockey loving, Poutine eating, strong beer drinking O'Canada singing group...unless they're from Quebec then they mine as well be French.
